Workshop for Legal Language Professionals – Legal Design in Action: How to Put People at the Heart of Legal Communication- Tuesday, April 14, 2026

In this series of workshops, the Graduate Diploma in Legal Translation at McGill University invites you to discover different dimensions of professions at the crossroad of law and languages. We offer both introductory workshops to key professions, such as legal translation and court interpreting, as well as workshops on highly specialized issues that will better meet the needs of experienced jurilinguists.

This workshop offers practical tools to rethink how legal information is created and shared. Drawing on extensive hands-on experience, it will show how user-centered design can transform legal communication by shifting perspective from the professional’s viewpoint to that of the people who actually use documents and services.

Through accessible examples and actionable tips, participants will be encouraged to connect these insights to their own practice, leaving with concrete approaches to make complex information more understandable and relevant.

Although rooted in the legal field, this workshop is equally valuable for non-lawyers, since design thinking applies across disciplines to improve communication and services. Ultimately, the session demonstrates why adopting design thinking is not only useful but necessary to enhance clarity, usability, and trust, and to create solutions that truly meet people’s needs.

This initiative is supported by Justice Canada’s Access to Justice in Both Official Languages Support Fund.
