Winston & Strawn LLP, the Chicago- based law firm that opened its first Asian office in Hong Kong last year has hired Baker & McKenzie LLP?s Ge Xiangyang to head its new Beijing office.

The firm also opened in Shanghai after China?s Justice Ministry approved its takeover of the two offices from collapsed San Francisco-based firm Heller Ehrman LLP on Oct. 21, according to Winston & Strawn?s Asia practice chairman Simon Luk.
?We?re aiming to develop a broad corporate practice in a short time,? Ge, who was head of Baker?s China regulatory and compliance practice, said in an interview.
U.S. and U.K. law firms have expanded in China, with 28 foreign firms registered to do business on the mainland from September 2006 to January 2009, the latest available figure. Winston & Strawn is the 42nd-highest grossing law firm in the world, collecting $745 million in revenue in 2008, according to the American Lawyer, a trade magazine.
?As the world market continues to rebound from last year?s downturn we see Asia, and China particularly, continuing to play an increasingly important role,? Thomas Fitzgerald, Winston & Strawn?s managing partner, said in a statement.
