Description:
The People’s Republic of China presents a daunting challenge to the rule of law and fundamental human rights. Many observers believe the past decade has seen China less willing to abide by international law and norms, and the trend is accelerating.
For example, (i) the Uyghur Muslim population of Xinjiang continues to be subject to massive and systemic repression; (ii) civil liberties and promised democratic autonomy in Hong Kong face unprecedented threats under the new National Security Law and (iii) Chinese lawyers continue to face often brutal persecution.
How should the United States government, civil society, and the private sector respond to these and related violations of international law? Will broader re-engagement by the United States with the global architecture of treaties and cooperation have an effect on the Chinese domestically or in its international activities? What are the implications for business and foreign lawyers active in China?
