Forgotten Angels Equine Rescue has rescued nearly 280 horses from kill pens since it was founded in 2012 by Darlene Supnick and Lisa Draharod.
A local law firm’s donation was the Thanksgiving week miracle needed to save a former racehorse.
Medford-based Forgotten Angels Equine Rescue was working to rescue Voiage, a standardbred former harness racing horse, from a kill pen in Pennsylvania it was sold to after its owner died.
However, the nonprofit was short on funding after recently rescuing five other horses. So, Maria Dedes, whose daughter Trina Dedes volunteers at Forgotten Angels, set up a gofundme fundraiser to attempt to raise enough money to save the horse.
The fundraiser made its way to the desk of Richard P. Console Jr., founder of Console and Associates based in Evesham. Console said he had been monitoring the gofundme and noticed that not many donations were coming in and time was running out.
Voiage was scheduled to be shipped to Mexico soon to meet his demise.
The law firm donated nearly all the money required to save the horse.
“It’s Thanksgiving, and it’s sad that a horse was going to be slaughtered like that,” Console said. “The horse was in a very inhumane situation and we wanted to try and help out.”
Console said that the firm has Voiage’s picture hanging in its office.
“It was really great, the whole office is really excited,” Console said. “It gave everybody a very warm feeling.”
