VACANCY – EVENING ASSISTANT WANTED – GRAY’S INN LIBRARY

VACANCY – EVENING ASSISTANT WANTED – GRAY’S INN LIBRARY

This would be an excellent opportunity for someone currently attending Library school or already working in a library but wishing to work some extra hours or gain experience in a different type of library.  You would be assisting barristers and students, handling enquiries and carrying out library housekeeping tasks in an attractive and historic setting.

Gray’s Inn Library is run by a small friendly team and most of our current Evening Assistants have chosen to continue working with us over many years.

THE ROLE

We are looking for a new Evening Assistant to help cover our weekday evening shifts from 17.00 – 20.00.  Currently we have midweek vacancies, so ideally need someone who is available at this time (Thursday evenings in particular).

We also open on one Saturday a month during legal terms in rotation with the other Inn libraries, so there would be an opportunity to work some Saturdays from 10.00 – 17.00.  Additionally, from time to time you may be asked if you are interested in working extra hours to cover absences or holidays.

(Please note that evening shift work is not required during major holiday times including Christmas, Easter and late May, or during August and early-September)

Previous experience of working in a law library would be helpful but is by no means essential.  Experience of working in any kind of library is highly desirable.

Employment would be on a casual basis, with a competitive hourly rate of pay.  If you are interested, please send your CV and covering letter to: recruitment@graysinn.org.uk.

GRAY’S INN is one of four Inns of Court responsible for calling barristers to the Bar of England and Wales.  Its members are students, barristers and judges.  The Inn provides pre-qualifying scholarships and support for students in addition to post-qualifying advocacy training.  The Inn’s facilities include the Library, chapel, dining in Hall, a bar and a private garden called the Walks.

GRAY’S INN LIBRARY
The Library houses over 75,000 books, journals and law reports, including rare books and manuscripts dating back to the 11th century.  As well as offering a full collection of English legal materials to meet the general needs of barristers, we also cover books and reports in twenty specialist areas of law.  Our most significant specialist collection, maintained on behalf of all four Inns of Court, is in international law, including international arbitration, together with comprehensive coverage of treaties and public international law.  In addition, the Library offers a range of online resources and a professional enquiry service for students and barristers.
