The Law Library serves students, faculty, and staff, of the College, students, faculty, and staff of the UNT System as well as the members of the bar. The library’s principal user population will include nearly 400 students and approximately 12 full-time faculty. There are both day and evening divisions. One of the Library’s strength is the librarians’ inclusion in the legal research instruction program in the first year as well as in the second and third years through offerings of advanced legal research and research segments in upper division classes. Beside the Assistant Dean, the Library’s staff will include three librarians and two paraprofessionals.

This is a non-tenure track faculty position which reports to the Assistant Dean for Law Libraries. The primary duties are to provide legal research instruction and reference services to students, faculty, and other patrons. Other duties may include bibliographic and consultative work, liaison work, research guide development, and collection development. This position may be responsible for the supervision of one or more student assistants. During term time, the librarian may work evenings and weekends to serve the needs of college’s evening division.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Teaches legal research in the first-year program
  • Teaches advanced legal research
  • Conduct legal research labs and workshops
  • Develops library instructional materials, including class pages, subject guides and print handouts
  • Staffs the library’s one service desk
  • Provides basic and in-depth reference services via various media and in-person
  • Develops library instructional materials
  • Creates and maintains web pages
  • Develops online content for distance students
  • Participates in departmental outreach activities
  • Participates in collection development
  • Stays abreast of current trends in reference and instruction librarianship
  • Supervises the work of student assistants and other departmental staff as needed
  • Other responsibilities as assigned
  • Is active professionally and contributes to the developments in the field

Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess the following required qualifications:

  • JD or equivalent from ASA-accredited school
  • MLS or equivalent from an ALA accredited program
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

  • Experience teaching legal research
  • Experience providing reference services in a law library, including within a virtual environment Experience with web page development
  • Experience providing assistance with online database searching
  • Familiarity with a variety of legal online databases Understanding of collection development
  • Experience developing training materials and sessions Familiarity with Canvas course management system
  • Evidence of participation in professional organizations appropriate to the level of appointment

Physical requirements necessary to perform essential job functions

Work is primarily sedentary. Sits comfortably to do the work; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, or lifting items weighing up to 15 pounds.
