USA Position: Foreign, Comparative & International Law Librarian J. Michael Goodson Law Library

 The Goodson Law Library invites applications for the position of Foreign, Comparative and International Law Librarian to join our team of skilled and creative professionals who provide extensive research and reference services in a technologically advanced environment serving a sophisticated and research-oriented faculty and student body. This updated position emphasizes our need for an experienced research librarian with knowledge of international legal systems, resources, and research methods or strong interest in developing them.

Primary areas of responsibility include: in-depth research support to faculty engaged primarily in international and comparative law; instruction in an advanced research course in foreign, comparative and international law research methods to JD/LLM students, and in the 1L legal research and writing course; liaison services to international studies programs, journals, clinics, and moot court teams; a leading role in collection development for foreign and international law; and legal research assistance to Law School students and staff and the Duke community.  The successful candidate will be committed to developing further expertise in foreign, comparative and international law and research methods. Duke Law librarians are encouraged to seek and are supported in their efforts to grow professionally.

 Educational Requirements:

MLS and JD degrees from accredited institutions, or non-U.S. equivalents.

 Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • Two years of related experience, particularly in international law research
  • Knowledge of international law and legal systems and organizations, and familiarity with civil law legal systems
  • Substantial knowledge and proficiency in a wide range of legal information and research methods
  • Strong service orientation and demonstrated oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to take initiative, as well as to work collaboratively in an environment with high performance standards

Preferred Qualifications & Experience:

  • Teaching or training experience or strong aptitude for teaching, training, and instructional design
  • Ability to assist researchers with non-English legal sources, particularly in French and/or German
  • Strong technology skills, and interest in applying current and developing technologies in legal education

Reference Librarians are non tenure track members of the Law School faculty at the rank of Lecturing Fellow.
