USA: Over 10, 000 historical Law Library books looking for new home

Josephine County is planning to significantly downsize its Law Library collection, and staff members are hoping to find new homes for the volumes — some more than 100 years old — with collectors in the community.

According to a press release, the library, which is currently open by appointment only, houses between 10,000 and 15,000 books. However, the use of those volumes has decreased in recent years as much of the information they contain can be found online.

“We have complete coverage for a fraction of the cost of getting that access in print volumes,” Hicks wrote.

Library staff plan to retain about 3,000 to 5,000 of the books at the most — the rest are free to local collectors, artisans or other interested parties.

“We are retaining a small portion of the collection for the library in its new location on the first floor of the Josephine County Courthouse and giving most of the collection away to the public,” wrote Wally Hicks, Josephine County legal counsel.

Those interested in obtaining Law Library books are welcome to contact the Law Library at (541) 474-5228 to make an appointment.

The Josephine County Law Library is open to the public and provides access to statutes, rules, cases and other legal information through printed materials and electronic access. A computer is available for accessing the OJCIN. Copies and printouts are 25 cents per page. Staff may not provide legal advice or representation. Staff is available to help patrons locate materials or links that may aid in an individual search and can conduct additional research on specific legal subjects.
