The University of California Hastings College of the Law was founded in 1878 as the law department of the University of California and was the first law school in California. Over the years, it has built a legacy and reputation of being a preeminent institution comprised of renowned faculty committed to the study of legal theory and research, preparing students for careers in the judicial system, public service, and industry. The College is redefining legal education through an experiential, interdisciplinary, and international approach to the law. By integrating rigorous academics with hands-on practice, the College is preparing its graduates to tackle the legal challenges—and leverage the opportunities—of the 21st century.

 

Under the general supervision of the Associate Dean for Library and Technology, the Digital Initiatives Librarian coordinates with the Law School’s web developer, Law Library staff and the Communications Department of the Law School to design, develop and implement technologically innovative services and applications and web-based access to information resources. Digital projects may include, but are not limited to, library website design, building interactive experiences through websites and mobile apps, enhancing the Law School’s robust Scholarship Repository, creating additional digital repositories and virtual tours.

 

Selected candidate oversees and produces library web content, including the exams database, the ballot measures database and related law library initiatives; develops related best practices and procedures; in coordination with the Faculty Services Librarian, continues to develop and maintain the law school Scholarship Repository (a Digital Commons-based platform); monitors and investigates emerging technologies related to the delivery of library services and digital collections, and assists in the development and deployment of these new technologies; assists in the creation of research guides and instructional materials; participates in workshops and trainings for students, faculty and library staff in the use of library electronic resources and tools; and monitors and reports on current developments affecting scholarly publishing, particularly open access and institutional repositories. Additionally, provides outreach and education on scholarly communications issues to the Law School community; engages with faculty and students to secure content and create new partnerships; provides Reference Desk support as needed; participates in student trainings and orientations as needed; handles administrative projects and other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of the Library and Information Technology and Deputy Director of the Law Library; and prepares and presents relevant departmental reports to the Associate Dean and Deputy Director and/or to other entities as requested or required.

 

Requires an ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science OR significant graduate level coursework toward such a degree, while a Bachelor’s degree with a focus in either writing, technical communication, computer science, communications, marketing or a related field is strongly desired. Must have experience working with web design, knowledge of contemporary web standards and experience with content management systems and scripting languages; demonstrated knowledge of scholarly publishing, new models for scholarly communication, and the associated technical, legal and information policy issues; and a thorough knowledge of legal bibliography as well as a mastery of legal research sources in both print and electronic formats. Also requires familiarity with bibliographic markup standards and knowledge of integrated library systems, knowledge or experience with archival systems and current trends in information preservation and curation, and excellent interpersonal, written & oral communication, customer service, analytical, problem solving, interpersonal and management skills. The ability to quickly learn and apply new technical skills and demonstrated relevant experience with metadata work on digital projects are necessary and experience with Berkeley Electronic Press Digital Commons software is preferred.

 

This full-time opportunity offers an annual salary range of $55,435-$77,221 (commensurate with qualifications) plus an excellent benefits package.
