The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Peoria has charged a McLean County assistant public defender with sending threats across state lines to harm another person over the past three years.
Federal agents with help from the McLean County Sheriff’s Office arrested Sean E. Lenckus, 35, Friday evening.
According to a release, the Bloomington man allegedly transmitted several interstate threats to injure another person between February of 2023 and April of this year.
The release did not mention Lenckus’ job, nor were specifics given about the threats.
County government documents prepared for the fiscal year 2026 county budget show Lenckus making $108,592, including wages and benefits.
County Board Chair Elizabeth Johnston said in a statement that county officials do not comment on personnel matters and ongoing investigations.
“As a matter of policy and in accordance with best practices, the County does not comment on personnel matters or ongoing investigations. This approach ensures the protection of individual rights, maintains the integrity of any investigative process, and upholds the County’s commitment to fairness and due process.
We take all matters involving public trust seriously. Should any action be warranted consistent with County policies and procedures, it will be handled through established administrative processes.”
Lenckus appeared in court and was released on bond, pending future court appearances, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.
If Lenckus is found guilty, he faces up to five years in federal prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.
His arrest followed an investigation by the FBI’s field office in Springfield and the McLean County Sheriff’s Office.
A mug shot of Lenckus was not available.
