US denies Chinese student a visa because father is a police officer

Chinese student planning to study in the US has been denied a visa, with the embassy saying it was because the applicant’s father works for the police, according to the education company handling it.

The letter informing the student of the refusal said visa issuance for senior Chinese officials employed by four intelligence and law enforcement departments, as well as their spouses and children, had been suspended. According to the education company, the student’s father is a low-level officer.

The US embassy in Beijing did not reply to a request for comment, but Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said it was “good proof” that the United States had disrupted normal personnel exchanges between the two countries for political reasons, which was not conducive to good
