Job Description
The University of Denver Sturm College of Law (Denver Law) is a national leader in experiential legal education, a recognized innovator in legal pedagogy, and the home of multiple nationally-recognized programs and centers, including a Top-10 program in legal research and writing. The Westminster Law Library is a selective federal depository containing over 400,000 physical volumes, with an extensive collection of federal and state materials, digital collections, rare books, and specialized collections in tax, environmental and natural resources law, and international law. A strong relationship with the University’s Main Library ensures expansive access to purchased and licensed content, as well as additional governmental and social science resources.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Dean and forming part of Denver Law’s senior leadership team, the Director of Law Library holds the position of Professor in University Libraries. The position is a 12-month faculty position with eligibility for up to a seven-year renewable contract. Evaluation criteria for appointment, annual review, reappointment, and promotion in the Professorial Series in University Libraries are based primarily upon contributions made to educational and other institutional goals through librarianship, scholarly research, participation in shared governance, and service to the University, profession, and public.
Essential Functions
- Supervise full-time professional staff, including reference and access services librarians, as well as part-time employees.
- Serve as a faculty liaison to match library resources with faculty needs.
- Responsible for all areas of library operations, including, among others: budgeting; staffing and personnel management; strategic planning; overseeing student and faculty support services; setting collection development priorities; and managing current and future technological needs and services.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to articulate and implement a vision for a law library of the twenty-first century.
- Appreciation for the changing roles of libraries in the information community and the creativity to adapt the Westminster Law Library to new needs of students, faculty, administrators, alums, and the broader community.
- Familiarity with relevant legal information technologies, including legal research systems, case management systems, and other legal information tools relevant to modern-day legal practice.
- Record of strong interpersonal, management, and budgeting skills.
- Extensive knowledge of library databases, integrated library systems, inventory control, and other relevant information technologies and services.
Required Qualifications
- JD from an ABA-accredited law school and an MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited library or information science program.
- Several years of experience in law librarianship and a demonstrated record in law library administration.
- Distinguished record of scholarly research.
- Experience with and interest in emerging informational and instructional technologies.
- Demonstrated experience with, or a commitment to, working effectively with historically underrepresented populations.
Preferred Qualifications
- M.L.I.S (or M.L.S.) from an ALA-accredited institution.
- Experience as the director, associate director, or assistant director of an academic law library.
