Ukraine: In Transcarpathia, a lawyer helped smuggle draft dodgers across the border

In Zakarpattia, a lawyer was detained who is already on trial for organizing the illegal smuggling of conscripts across the state border. According to investigators, after posting bail, he resumed similar activities.

This time, in the Berehove district, the lawyer—according to investigators—was supposed to help a 41-year-old man illegally leave Ukraine for $7,000.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the lawyer picked up the man from a hotel in Khust and drove him toward the state border. To maintain secrecy, he wore a mask bearing the image of rapper 50 Cent. Law enforcement officers detained him immediately after he received the money.

The lawyer was notified of the charges against him under Part 3 of Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—illegal transportation of persons across the state border of Ukraine. The charges were signed by Myroslav Patskan, head of the Transcarpathian Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

During the court hearing, the prosecutor noted that this was the third time the lawyer had been detained for a similar crime.

Previously, the prosecutor’s office had also requested that he be remanded in custody without the possibility of bail. However, the court each time opted for a preventive measure allowing for the posting of bail.

After posting bail, the attorney, according to the investigation, resumed his illegal activities.

The man was previously detained in October 2025. At that time, according to the investigation, he organized a criminal group that operated in the Uzhhorod, Berehove, and Vynogradiv districts.

This case is currently pending before the Uzhhorod City and District Court.

The prosecutor’s office again insisted on the suspect’s detention without any alternative.

The court agreed that the suspect should be remanded in custody but set an alternative—a bail of nearly 1 million hryvnias.

The prosecutor’s office has already filed an appeal regarding the amount of bail.

Earlier in Zakarpattia, law enforcement officials uncovered a group that organized the illegal departure abroad of men of draft age and active-duty military personnel. The cost of smuggling them to Slovakia reached $32,000.

A 30-year-old resident of the Vinnytsia region, suspected of organizing the illegal smuggling of men across the state border, was extradited to Ukraine. Upon his return, he was taken into custody.
