Subject Support Librarian

Job description

About us: Library, Careers and Inclusivity (LCI) brings together Library Services, Careers and Enterprise, and Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity to deliver outstanding outcomes for all of our students in partnership with Faculties and other Services. Our work impacts student recruitment and retention, academic success, student satisfaction and graduate destination outcomes.

We aim to:

  • Enable learners to become independent and confident and to achieve their full potential in respect of academic achievement and employment.
  • Ensure learners have high satisfaction levels in the area of independent access to, and use of, information.
  • Facilitate high quality research and maximise the global impact of UWE research.
  • Set a whole institution approach to inclusivity, profiling UWE as an inclusive university that places the mental wealth of students and staff as a strategic priority.

About you: Library Services is seeking to appoint a Subject Support Librarian with a specific focus on the Faculty of Business and Law (FBL), based at the Frenchay Campus Library.

You will be a qualified Librarian with experience in teaching/training and developing students’ academic literacy.

As one of a team of 5 FTE, led by the Faculty Librarians (Job Share) for Business and Law, you will be providing direct support for students, staff and researchers in the Faculty on both academic skills and supporting the effective use of our collections and services (e.g. online reading lists).

You will support students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, assisting in design and delivering embedded teaching on information and academic skills, such as critical and reflective writing, planning and structuring writing, note taking, finding and evaluating information sources in business and law. You will deliver stand-alone academic skills sessions which are open to all students from all faculties, some of which are specifically aimed at international students. You will build and maintain strong working relationships with Faculty colleagues to deliver high quality teaching and support.

In this role, you will be involved in the creation and implementation of Technology Enhanced Learning. This may take the form of online workbooks, quizzes and tutorials which are embedded into programme design.

The role will involve working closely with other Subject Support Librarians, staffing the enquiry desk, answering online queries and supporting our Ask a Librarian instant chat service, as well as having opportunities to be involved in projects spanning Library Services.

You will have:

  • Professional qualification, or working towards a professional qualification, in a library/information related subject, e.g. CILIP or equivalent. (For those working towards a professional qualification, the expectation is that this is awarded within the probation period/approx. 6 months of starting in post).
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development, such as working towards: Chartered membership of CILIP, a teaching qualification or a management qualification.
  • Experience of working in a library/information environment.
  • Experience of providing teaching/training to groups of students and/or staff.
  • Experience of helping to develop academic literacy (e.g. information skills/academic writing).
  • Excellent IT skills with experience of email, MS Office applications (including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Sharepoint/Teams), online collaborative and web-based systems, and able to extract and manipulate data to produce reports.

As a member of Library Services, you will be part of a strong and collaborative community of professional librarians and specialists, and central to the design and delivery of innovative, high quality student support.
