The UK has announced a new “flagship” court that has been designed to tackle cybercrime, fraud and economic crime.
The new 18 courtroom legal centre will be located at Fleetbank House, near Fleet Street, home to London’s once thriving publishing and newspaper industry.
The new building will replace the aging civil court, as well as the Mayor’s and City of London County Court, and the City of London Magistrate’s Court, which has a long history of handling local and international financial crime lawsuits.
The facility will also be home to the City of London Police, which recently announced plans to hire “cyber detectives” from universities and launched an initiative dubbed “Cyber Griffin”, a kind outreach program to help local financial institutions prepare for and respond to cyber attacks. The service provides businesses with security briefings, incident response exercises, and advisory services.
The new building is being developed with the City of London Corporation and is said to be a “cutting edge, purpose-built court” that will deal with business, property, and civil cases.
“I’m particularly pleased that this court will have a focus on the legal issues of the future, such as fraud, economic crime, and cyber-crime,” said Catherine McGuinness, policy chairman of the City of London Corporation.
“Fleet Street may historically be known for hosting newspapers, but I believe with this iconic project it will be seen as a world leading centre for legal services and justice for decades to come.”
The facility is hoped to give UK’s reputation among businesses a boost from the damage caused by Brexit.
Lord Chancellor David Gauke said the new building would help London remain an attractive place for businesses to locate themselves.
