UK: Paralegal rebuked and partner fined for errors that cost DWF £1.55m

Roll on Friday

A paralegal has been rebuked by the SRA and a partner fined for wrongly authorising the release of £2.56m to a property developer which then went bust, leaving their firm to pick up a large chunk of the bill.

Shawn Sloyan was a senior paralegal in DWF’s Manchester office when he approved the transfer of 89 house deposit payments for ‘Development C’ to the firm’s client, ‘Company A’, between 2019 and 2022.

Unfortunately deposits relating to 45 of the units were released to the seller without the necessary Deposit Warranty Insurance policies being obtained.

Deposits for another 44 units were sent on their way before Supervisors’ Certificates were produced, which were required to prove the foundations, structural frame, floor slabs and stair core of each house had been built.

In December 2020 it “became apparent that no or little work had been carried out on the site”.

When the firm realised the error and pursued its own client for repayment, it received the unwelcome news that Company A had entered administration.
