UK: Applications for the Alex McVitty award for the 2021/22 academic year is now open

Stewart Spear of the BIALL Awards & Bursaries Committee writes

***Attention City University students – MSc Information Science or MSc/MA Library science.***

Applications for the Alex McVitty award for the 2021/22 academic year, an award of £2000 over two academic terms, for a City University student will close midnight on 31 July 2021.

Alex McVitty worked in the library at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies before completing her MSc in Information Science at City University in 1998. After successfully graduating she worked at the law firm Cameron McKenna. Alex was tragically killed in a road accident while cycling to work. In memory of Alex, her family, friends and colleagues chose to establish a memorial fund in her name. As Alex had struggled to fund herself through her MSc course, combining part-time library jobs with her studies, her family and friends thought it would be fitting to provide an annual award to a postgraduate student wishing to pursue a career in law librarianship or a related field.

Criteria:

Applicants should:

  • be full-time students at City University in one of the following courses:

o   MSc Information Science

o   MSc/MA Library Science

  • have a demonstrable interest in law librarianship, legal information, or knowledge management
  • be able to demonstrate financial need

Applications should be sent via email to [email protected], noting clearly that you are applying for the Alex McVitty award.
