Uganda Law Society raises concern over ‘militarisation of Country’s legal environment’

Anthony Asiimwe, the Vice President of the Uganda Law Society, said legal professionals in Uganda are operating in an environment overshadowed by military influence, where the government has imposed state-of-emergency–like measures without the required constitutional backing. He cited recent developments such as the internet blackout that disrupted service delivery, as well as abductions and the torture of political opponents. Asiimwe added that, despite these violations, the judicial system—which should offer protection, has instead turned against victims by entertaining trumped-up charges and denying bail, actions he said amount to judicial endorsement of authoritarian rule.
