Twitter Thinks Lorde Is Going to Jail, So Here’s What #FreeLorde Really Means

You know, just when I thought that the internet would stop giving me gems like the infamous Area 51 raid, that inexplicable meme about 30-50 feral hogs, and the brief summer obsession with White Claw, the internet (specifically Twitter) just keeps on giving. And honestly, bless it! Because now, Twitter has turned its collective sights onto a new target—singer and songwriter Ella Yelich-O’Connor, more commonly known as Lorde.

It almost seems out of place that everyone is talking about Lorde, given that she’s been on a musical hiatus for some time now. Lorde’s hiatus feels even longer because she literally never posts anything online—what an enigma! So when I logged on to Twitter dot com and saw that #FreeLorde was trending, I had no choice but to click. Wondering what the hoopla’s all about? Don’t worry, I gotchu!

Imagine wanting to imprison an artist who made NZ so famous and well known for a having a talented 16 year old girl, Lorde who her concerts were being sold in minutes and Royals is a #1 hit and changed the pop music… we gotta save Lorde till we die

SO…WHY ARE PEOPLE TWEETING #FREELORDE?

According to the stans, Lorde is at risk of serving jail time following an alleged $3,000 fine she refuses to pay to New Zealand authorities. In an attempt to raise awareness, the stans created #FreeLorde to spread the good word and save their favorite pop star from being locked up. It makes sense, because Lorde can’t make new music from behind bars!

OKAY, BUT IS THIS THE FULL TRUE STORY?

LOL, no—of course not! This is just simply a case of the stans trolling the crap out of everyone and having a laugh. The original story was provided courtesy of New Zealand’s Newshub, which explained that their country’s National Party is thinking of creating a policy that fines the parents of children who leave school early and leave their studies incomplete. The fine would be $3,000, and the current New Zealand law requires students to stay in school until age 16.

As for Lorde, she attended Takapuna Grammar School from 2010 to 2013 and completed Year Twelve, which is equivalent to a high schooler’s junior year in America. Lorde’s career was beginning to take off after she released her 2013 debut album, Pure Heroine, so she didn’t return to complete her final year of school in 2014. If the new policy were implemented, Lorde’s family would be required to pay the $3,000 fine, not her.

IS LORDE REALLY GOING TO JAIL?

No! Lorde stans fabricated this part of the story just for laughs. New Zealand’s fine policy is not even a real thing yet. Hell, it might not even become a thing! The original story mentioned absolutely nothing about possible jail time in relation to the fines.

DOES THIS DRAMA MEAN NEW LORDE MUSIC?

I highly doubt it. Lorde is an artist known for operating at her own pace, so she will release L3 when she is good and ready!
