Twiggy Loses TM battle

To be honest i find it somewhat strange that she loses her TM identity considering some of the corporate wins i’ve seen over the years of writing this blog..and i’m only too happy to be at a polar opposite to Lord Sugar. Don’t even start me on him!

  • Dame Lesley Lawson, known as Twiggy, lost a case for rights to ‘Twiggy’ name
  • Twiggy, 71, tried to stop dog accessories company from registering a trademark

Just her name conjures up images of the Swinging Sixties.

But despite her reputation as a cultural icon, Twiggy has lost a case in which she had claimed she owned the rights to the Twiggy name.

The 73-year-old model, singer and actress – pictured in her heyday – had tried to stop an outdoor dog accessories company, called Twiggy Tags, registering a trademark.

But after the case went before the Intellectual Property Office, the dog company was allowed to trademark their own name.

The model, whose real name is Dame Lesley Lawson, is also said to have surrendered all four of her Twiggy trademark registrations.

Lord Sugar’s company Trade Mark Wizards worked on behalf of the dog accessories company.

The Apprentice star said: ‘Legendary status doesn’t give you automatic trademark rights.’

It is understood that Twiggy had originally filed an opposition to the company’s trademark and that Trade Mark Wizards had responded with a cancellation action, as her four trademark registrations had not been used in recent years.

According to sources the case still went to a formal decision even though Twiggy had surrendered her registrations.
