Journalist Alican Uluda?, detained a day after prosecutors opened an investigation over his social media posts, was released pending trial under judicial control measures that include a travel ban and mandatory police reporting.
A Turkish court on Wednesday ordered the release of journalist and Deutsche Welle (DW) Turkish reporter Alican Uluda? under judicial control measures, including a ban on leaving the country and a requirement to report to authorities four days a week, after he was detained over social media posts.
Uluda? had been taken into custody on Tuesday after prosecutors launched an investigation on allegations of “publicly disseminating misleading information” and “inciting hatred and hostility among the public” under Articles 217/A and 216 of the Turkish Penal Code. Authorities searched his home before taking him into custody.
After spending the night at Ankara Police Headquarters, Uluda? was referred to the Ankara Courthouse, where prosecutors questioned him before requesting judicial measures instead of detention. The court released him pending trial with a travel ban and a reporting obligation.
According to Turkish media, the investigation was opened following a social media post in which Uluda? criticized the judicial system. Lawyer ?rem Çiçek, who reposted the message, was also reportedly included in the investigation.
