Twin Cities website reports
Global legal publishing and media data firm Thomson Reuters announced Thursday that it’s selling a large part of its Eagan campus and has begun looking for new property in the Twin Cities area.
The impending move comes after employee survey data revealed workers want to split their time between office and home, opting for a hybrid work environment. Thomson Reuters has been in Dakota County since 1996, when it bought out West Publishing for $3.4 billion. West Publishing had a facility in Eagan since 1978, and officially moved its headquarters there from downtown St. Paul in 1992.
The company’s next Twin Cities move will include around 4,500 employees ranging from data scientists and technologists to attorney editors and business operation roles, said Paul Fischer, president of Legal Professionals for Thomson Reuters and co-site lead for the company’s Minneapolis-St. Paul campus, in an email. The goal is to create an energized and shared work environment to align with hybrid working, Fischer said, noting how work environments play a key role in retaining and attracting top talent.
The Minneapolis-St. Paul site is, and will remain, the company’s largest in North America, Fischer said.
“Our legacy in Minnesota dates back 150 years, and Thomson Reuters is deeply committed to continuing to invest in our operations in the Twin Cities, our people and this community,” said Fischer.
The company plans to start its search in the southeast metro and expand across the area, said Tom Walrath, vice president of Real Estate and Facilities, in an email. Redeveloping its Eagan campus has been taken off the table, Walrath said, after reviewing employee feedback and exploring multiple real estate scenarios including staying at the current site.
“After conducting an extensive evaluation of our options — including numerous conversations with employees, stakeholders and local officials to understand the impact of our decision and provide transparency — we are exploring opportunities to give employees a modern, collaborative office environment that is aligned with our hybrid work model and meets the needs of a dynamic workforce,” Fischer said.
