The Philippines: PNP: 2 cops, 1 lawyer killed in Tagaytay shooting incident

Two police officers who were inquiring about a residential lot inside a subdivision in Tagaytay City, Cavite  were among three persons killed in a shooting incident over the weekend, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Monday.

In a statement, the PNP identified the victims as Police Captain Adrian Binalay from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group – National Capital Region and Police Captain Tomas Ganio Batarao Jr. from the Regional Personnel Holding Accounting Section.

A civilian accompanied the two cops to a subdivision in Barangay Maatim where a security guard discouraged them from entering the property. Despite the guard’s warning, the men proceeded inside to reportedly inspect a lot.

A short while later, the suspects, identified as an “Attorney Santos” and a male companion, arrived at the aboard a vehicle.

“Without provocation, Atty. Santos opened fire on the officers from inside his vehicle, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Both the officers and the suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the encounter,” the PNP said.Binalay was pronounced dead on the spot. Batarao and the suspect were brought to the nearest hospital but both were declared dead on arrival.

“Two other suspects were apprehended by authorities at Tagaytay Medical Center and are currently in the custody of the Tagaytay City Police Station as the investigation continues,” the PNP said.
