The Law of the Sea of Vietnam (LSV) was introduced for the first time at an international seminar held in the Republic of
Korea on October 26.
Prof. Dr. Vo Khanh Vinh from the Vietnam Institute of Social Sciences presented the law at the seminar, entitled
?Law, Culture and History in East Asia ?.
Vinh stated that Vietnam has joined the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982) and some other
sea-related international treaties.
The country has always abided by the provisions of UNCLOS 1982 in the exercise of sovereignty and jurisdiction over its
waters on the basis of Vietnamese law and related bilateral and regional agreements, he stressed.
According to the professor, the promulgation of the LSV in 2012 aims to institutionalise related contents in previous legal
documents and complete a legal framework serving the use, management and protection of the country?s seas and islands
as well as the development of the marine economy.
Participants at the seminar agreed that UNCLOS is an important legal basis for coastal countries like Vietnam to affirm
their sovereignty and jurisdiction in accordance with the convention. It is also a foundation for the demarcation of the seas
overlapped with other countries.
