“The Law of the European Union” – Hart Publishing

“The Law of the European Union”, an 800-page long textbook of EU Law, covering the constitutional foundations of the Union, its institutions, competences, sources of law, remedies and its key policy areas, such as the internal market, EMU, the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice, and external relations.

This is a very personal book, as it encapsulates one person’s view of an enormous legal system, but that is also the fun of it. EU Law is not perfect; it has gaps, is always evolving, and changes over time, so it’s subject to personal views and opinions on how the system should move forward. This book combines the objective rigour of precise explanation for an audience looking to understand how the EU’s legal system works, together with my own views on some of the open questions of our time.

The book should be a useful tool for both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as for practitioners dealing with EU law in their day-to-day work. While the text keeps things concise and to the point, the book features a heavy barrage of footnotes with abundant references to case law, legislation, academic doctrine, and soft law, so it provides a good balance for all audiences.

Pre-order is now available, and publication is due on 9 July 2026. If anybody wants an inspection copy, please contact Hart Publishing (in the link below) or contact me through a LinkedIn message.
