Full Job Description

The Law-Adult Services Librarian is responsible for maintaining the collection of materials of the Desoto County Law Library housed in the Hernando Public Library, as well as DeSoto Local History collections and other reference/adult materials. Research and assist in searching online databases and available print materials for the area legal community, for those incarcerated in Desoto County, and assists the general public with reference and other informational needs. Supports the Library’s mission, goals, and strategic plan; assumes responsibility for how the Library is perceived by staff and the public.

  • Three to five years working in law library environment, adult reference services, or other relevant experience.
  • Ability to learn and apply policies and procedures to the work environment.
  • Assists the general public with legal questions but may not advise in the role of attorney. Assists with guiding patrons in the local history department and other adult reference collections.
  • Research and/or assist in the searching of online databases such Casemaker Mississippi and WestLaw) and available print materials for the area legal community or for those who are incarcerated in Desoto County.
  • Assists in the selection of relevant legal materials for the Law Library’s collection, local history collection, as well as selected digital materials for adults. Serves as the collection manager for local history collection.
  • Manages the collections in a professional and consistent manner, so as to preserve collection integrity.
  • Excellent research, technology, and analytical skills, plus a working knowledge of legal reference sources, publications, computerized legal research platforms. Ability to make timely and appropriate materials selection for the adult digital collection.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills are required to analyze and identify the best research resources and resolve complex issues.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong organization, time management, and project management skills are also necessary to manage complex projects within tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently & complete tasks effectively and on time.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Must have a valid driver license with a clean driving record.
  • Work in an indoor environment while sitting at a desk and computer.
  • Ability to sit, stoop, and lift up 25 pounds.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required.
  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited Law School or Masters of Library Services preferred
  • Adequate experience as a Law Librarian may be substituted for a law practice or other experience. Other combination of relevant experience or education may be considered.
