The biggest legal tech deal of 2025 — for that matter, the biggest legal tech deal ever — was the Clio acquisition of vLex for $1 billion. A central player in that deal was Ed Walters, the cofounder of Fastcase who became chief strategy officer at vLex after his company and vLex merged in 2023.

Long a personal friend with Clio’s founder and CEO Jack Newton, the two had often imagined the possibilities of bringing together their legal research and practice management companies. With that now a reality, I sat down with Walters for this interview, recorded live at hashtagClioCon in Boston, to get his take on the significance of the deal and its implications for legal practitioners.
