Law for Palestine Co-Organizes Four Events During the 55th Human Rights Council Session

Delegates and attendees at the side event “Third States’ Responsibility in Implementing ICJ Measures to Prevent Genocide in Gaza” observed a minute of silence in honor of the innocent lives lost over the past six months.
Law for Palestine wrapped up a series of events it organized on the sidelines of the 55th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, running from February 26, 2024, to April 5, 2024.
First: HRC Event on Israel’s Detention and Torture of Palestinians
Monday, March 25th, 2024
During the 55th Session of the Human Rights Council, Law for Palestine, alongside several human rights organizations, including Adalah – The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, Palestinian Prisoners Society, Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association, Dignity – Danish Institute Against Torture, Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR), and Human Rights and Democracy Media Center (SHAMS), co-organized a side event titled “Shadows of Oppression: Israel’s Detention and Torture of Palestinians in OPT and Israel.” This event, held on Monday, March 25th, 2024, aimed to shed light on the detention and torture of Palestinians within Israeli detention facilities.

Second: HRC Side Event on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility of Third States towards Gaza
Tuesday, March 26th, 2024
Law for Palestine, in collaboration with the Independent Commission for Human Rights – Palestine (ICHR), Human Rights Watch (HRW), and the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRI), hosted a side event during the 55th Session of the Human Rights Council. The event, titled “Third States’ Responsibility in Implementing ICJ Measures to Prevent Genocide in Gaza,” was attended by 26 United Nations delegations, including representatives from Algeria, Austria, Belgium, Costa Rica, Croatia, the European Union (EU), Finland, Gambia, Greece, Iceland, Iraq, Ireland, Jordan, Libya, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Montenegro, Morocco, Palestine, Poland, Qatar, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. The event was also live-streamed, reaching an audience of over 1100 viewers worldwide.

Third: Symposium at the University of Geneva on the Situation of Palestinian Prisoners
Wednesday, March 27th, 2024
Beyond the Human Rights Council proceedings, Law for Palestine convened a symposium at the University of Geneva, attracting a diverse audience comprising students, activists, and local youth. Esteemed speakers included United Nations Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, Issam Younis, Director of the Al-Mezan Center for Human Rights in Gaza, Tala Nasir, Human Rights Lawyer at Addameer, Shahd Qaddoura, Legal Researcher at Al-Haq, and Khaled Quzmar, General Director of Defense for Children International – Palestine.
Fourth: UN HRC Event: Exposing Devastation on Women and Children in Gaza, Urging Action on Palestinian Rights

On 28 March, Association Ma’onah for Human Rights and Immigration, International-Lawyers.Org, Law for PalestineInternational Organization For the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination and Geneva International Centre for Justice (GICJ) hosted a side event at the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) featuring Dr Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territories occupied since 1967. The event was also joined by Ms. Rula Shadeed, a human rights defender coming to Geneva from Palestine. Both speakers addressed the devastation brought by Israel’s war on Gaza, specifically in regard to its terrible impact on women and children. The event was moderated by Mr Gautier Boyrie, a Senior Human Rights Officer at GICJ.
