The Appellate Court has upheld a two-year prison sentence for human rights lawyer Arnon Nampa under Article 112 for a 2020 speech criticizing legal amendments that personalised the management of royal property, bringing his total cumulative prison sentence to over 31 years. On July 16, 2026, the Court of Appeals upheld a lower court’s decision to sentence prominent human rights lawyer and pro-democracy activist Arnon Nampa to two years in prison under Thailand’s severe lèse-majesté law (Article 112). The ruling was confirmed by the Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR).
The case stems from a speech Arnon delivered on November 23, 2020, during a political rally titled “Mountain Party: Blowing the General’s Birthday Cake” at Chiang Mai University’s Art Center. During his address, Arnon critically analyzed legal amendments enacted in 2017 and 2018 under the military junta, the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO). These structural changes transferred the management of vast royal assets directly to the personal control and discretion of the King.
In his legal defense, Arnon maintained that his speech was a factual recitation of legislative history and that his critique was voiced out of genuine concern for the long-term institutional transparency and public perception of the monarchy.
However, the Appellate Court dismissed his arguments, ruling that the speech constituted defamation and insults against the monarch. The court affirmed a baseline three-year prison sentence, which was reduced by one-third to two years due to his useful testimony. This latest verdict adds to Arnon’s staggering cumulative prison sentence across multiple political expression cases, which now stands at 31 years and more than 9 months.
