Texas abortion ban: Attorney general, lawyer react after Supreme Court hears arguments

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and senior counsel for the Center for Reproductive Rights, Marc Hearron, offered their reaction to questions posed by U.S. Supreme Court justices on Monday, as they heard arguments on whether to allow a challenge to a near-total abortion law in Texas.

Over nearly three hours of oral arguments, the justices heard challenges by President Joe Biden’s administration and abortion providers.

Some justices signaled that existing Supreme Court precedent could accommodate a lawsuit brought by abortion providers challenging the law, even with the law’s unusual private-citizen enforcement structure.

The Texas law takes enforcement out of the hands of state officials and enables private citizens to sue anyone who performs or assists a woman getting an abortion after a heartbeat is detected.
