Symposium- The Rutgers International Law and Human Rights Journal- IL&HRJ Symposium | Old Law and New War: International Humanitarian Law and Conflict 75 Years After the Geneva Conventions

The Rutgers International Law and Human Rights Journal is proud to present our second ever Sympoisum on Friday, February 28 at the Center for Law and Justice. The 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions presents a unique moment to reflect on how international legal frameworks have adapted—or failed to adapt—to modern forms of warfare. The global community is increasingly confronted with new forms of conflict, where non-state actors, private military contractors, cyberattacks, and human rights abuses have become defining features. As such, the relevance of traditional IHL in addressing these new realities must be reexamined.

Moreover, there is an urgent need to broaden the conversation around the laws of war to include underrepresented perspectives from regions like Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa, where the impact of war has been most felt in recent years. The symposium will build on Rutgers Law School’s reputation for fostering international dialogue by inviting legal scholars, experts on the Geneva Conventions, and individuals from war-affected regions to engage in discussions that will benefit the entire Rutgers community and beyond. https://forms.gle/7JS4C4sDvPwCoJaD7
