Job Duties

Located in Richmond, Virginia, the Virginia State Law Library is seeking an energetic person to lead our dynamic staff of five. Created in 1902, the position of State Law Librarian is responsible for the operation of the State Law Library, a division of the Supreme Court of Virginia, and is statutory in nature (Code of Virginia §42.1-60). The law librarian reports directly to the Supreme Court of Virginia’s Chief Justice and supervises a staff of five full-time employees, including two law librarians, a librarian-archivist, and two paraprofessionals. The position requires professional work of a confidential nature, independent judgment, excellent oral and written communication skills, initiative, and discretion.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Primary administrative duties include:

o Supervising library staff
o Hiring and training new staff
o Developing long-range plans
o Managing the library’s space and facilities to ensure the most efficient use of resources
o Negotiating annual subscription and licensing agreements for library databases and subscriptions
o Administering the law library budget

  • Operational responsibilities include directing all day-to-day functions of the library including:

o Reference and research services,
o Archives services (including digital and print preservation)
o Acquisitions and cataloging
o Circulation and interlibrary loan
o Maintenance of the Virginia Appellate Court History and Virginia Judicial System Court Self-Help websites
o Educational programming for the court’s Judicial Learning Center

  • Primary professional duties include:

o Monitoring state and federal legislation related to library services
o Promoting the State Law Library and its resources and services to the judicial branch and the larger legal community in Virginia
o Developing and conducting training sessions for judicial branch staff
o Participating in Virginia access to justice initiatives
o Supporting and providing professional development opportunities for staff

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in library or information science (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible professional law library experience and five (5) years of supervisory and management experience
  • Excellent supervisory, organizational, communication, and leadership skills
  • Strong library service orientation and ability to deal effectively with a broad range of library users

Special Requirements:

The position requires the full range of normal body motion to include standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping, squatting, reaching, climbing stairs, and balancing. Occasionally must lift or carry boxes weighing as much as 35 pounds, and push/pull library book trucks weighing as much as 75 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Proficiency in administering and using integrated library systems, particularly EOS (SirsiDynix) or similar ILS

  • Experience administering and using OCLC library products, including Connexion, WorldCat, and WorldShare ILL
