Sri Lanka: Removal from roll of lawyers: Naga takes his case to UN

Public interest litigation activist Nagananda Kodituwakku has sought the intervention of Margaret Satterthwaite, Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, OHCHR after being struck off the roll of lawyers by the Supreme Court.

In a lengthy letter, dated April 03, 2024, addressed to Satterthwaite, Kodituwakku has presented facts, pertaining to his case, beginning with the banning imposed on him by the Supreme Court for a period of three years on March 18, 2019.

The Supreme Court on 29 February 2024 removed Kodituwakku from the roll of lawyers on a charge (SC/Rule/3/2017) framed by the Attorney General. The ruling also prohibited him from initiating public interest litigations even as a citizen. Kodituwakku said that in that regard a detailed written submission was tendered to the Bar Association of Sri Lanka on 22nd March 2024, requesting its immediate mediation.
