The Sri Lanka Law College will celebrate its 150th anniversary, a landmark achievement that reflects its rich history, enduring legacy and continuing commitment to shaping the future of legal education in Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lanka Law College has grown from humble beginnings into one of the most respected institutions for legal studies in the country. The zenith of the anniversary celebrations is the inaugural International Research Conference, titled ‘Law in the 21st Century: Exploring New Frontiers’ to be held from November 28 – 29 2024 at the BMICH.
Legal professionals
In the last 150 years, Sri Lanka Law College has produced generations of legal professionals, scholars, judges and leaders who have gone on to shape the legal landscape locally and globally. Its alumni can be found in every area of legal practice—from the highest courts to public interest law, academia, corporate law and beyond and is now looking further to add to this illustrious tradition with the inauguration of the International Research Conference.
The central theme for this year’s conference, ‘Law in the 21st Century: Exploring New Frontiers’, is focused on the emerging challenges in domestic and international law, considering the rapidly changing geopolitical, environmental and technological landscape. It will delve into key topics such as Constitutional and Human Rights, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Maritime Law and Law of the Sea, Legal Education and Legal Profession, Air and Space Law, Information Technology and Cyber Law, Corporate, Banking and Finance Law, Bribery and Anti-Corruption Law, Construction Law, Environmental and Natural Resources Law, Sports and Entertainment Law, Intellectual Property Law, International Trade and Investment Law, Children’s’ Rights and Gender Justice and Media and Freedom of Expression.
Legal luminaries and academics from across the globe will converge at the BMICH to deliberate on the latest developments and trends and provide a rare opportunity for thought-provoking and invigorating legal discourse on the ever-evolving landscape that is the Law.
The conference seeks to carry out 15 parallel sessions and will feature foreign keynote speakers who are leading experts in various fields of domestic and international law.
The conference opens with the keynote address by Justice Anselmo Reyes, International Judge of the Singapore International Commercial Court.

The unique feature of the conference is that it breaks new ground in having experts from other disciplines such as Kumar Sangakkara at the Sports and Entertainment Law session and Mrs. Subhashini Abeysinghe at the International Trade and Investment Law session. The conference will feature interactive sessions and workshops designed to foster dialogue, critical thinking and collaborative research. These will include presentations by domestic and international keynote speakers and presenters and will provide a platform for the discussion of legal academic research before a forum of peers and industry experts.
The Sri Lanka Law College International Law Research Conference is not only a platform for research but also for fostering global connections. Attendees will have the opportunity to network with peers from around the world, building relationships that may extend beyond the conference.
