Michael Jackson’s “Beat It,” Beyoncé’s “Run the World (Girls),” and Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” are among many songs Sony claims the University of Southern California has illegally used in TikTok, Instagram and other social media posts when promoting Trojans teams and athletes.
The allegations are detailed in a copyright infringement complaint Sony and a handful of record companies filed in the Southern District of New York on Tuesday. The case is the latest in what has become a pattern of sports-related litigation involving the use of songs in social media posts. Last year, 14 NBA teams and nine AHL teams were sued by license holders of popular songs used in teams’ social media posts that celebrate athletes.
