Singapore student pleads guilty to stomping on ibis

A SINGAPORE-born law student in Brisbane has been sentenced to 120 hours of community service for wrestling a wild bird to the ground and stomping on it.

The long-legged wading bird, an ibis, was so badly injured that it had to be put down.

Its crime: It had stalked Andrew Quay Wee Meng, 25, in Brisbane’s South Bank Parklands on March 1 – for his sandwich.

A magistrate’s court in the Australian city heard that the ibis had ‘snuck up from behind’ the student, who responded by throwing aside the sandwich, wrestling the bird to the ground and stomping on it five times, shattering its wing. An injury to its neck caused it such difficulty in breathing that it had to be euthanised.

Quay pleaded guilty yesterday to one count of animal cruelty.

The Herald Sun reported that in mitigation, his lawyer Sue Ganasan told the court that he had lashed out at the ibis because has feared Australian birds from the time he was attacked by a large crow.
