Senior Research Librarian Pepper Hamilton LLP – Philadelphia, PA

The Senior Research Librarian provides high-level research expertise to support attorneys, legal staff and administrators firm-wide. As a senior member of a centralized research services team serving 14 offices nation-wide, s/he serves as a positive role model and mentor to other team members, and performs all duties and responsibilities with a commitment to the firm’s core values of service, trust, interdependence and collegiality. The Senior Research Librarian embraces the concepts of teamwork and continuous quality improvement and demonstrates a willingness to take the lead on in-depth, complex research projects. This position coordinates support to the Marketing Department, the Records Center, the Office of the General Counsel and to all firm patrons in the use of both manual and electronic information resources.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • As part of a firm-wide research team, provides research expertise across the firm’s practice areas by retrieving, packaging and presenting information in response to requests from attorneys and staff;
  • In collaboration with the firm’s CI department, aggregates, analyzes and synthesizes internal and external data sources to produce client-based CI reports for business development and marketing purposes;
  • In collaboration with the firm’s Electronic Services Librarian, implements and manages new and on-going current awareness services such as docket tracking and news alerts, and provides regular updates to research team members;
  • Using Quest, the department’s research request system, thoughtfully delegates and assigns routine requests to team members;
  • Provides back-up coverage for Research Services Manager in her absence;
  • Provides back-up coverage, including occasional evening coverage, in the event of other colleagues’ absences.
  • Provides regular reference/front desk coverage;
  • Provides training to other library staff members as required;
  • Assists with the evaluation, recommendation and implementation of new products, services and technologies;
  • Participates in library orientation programs for all laterals, fall associates, summer associates and staff;
  • Handles administrative and other projects as assigned.

Educational / Job Experience Requirements:

  • Master of Library Science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited school;
  • 5+ years of experience providing research and reference services in a demanding law firm environment.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Substantive reference and research skills with a high degree of proficiency using standard legal research platforms including Lexis Advance, Bloomberg Law, Intelligize, Capital IQ, Lex Machina, CourtLink D&B-Hoovers and BNA Convergence;
  • Comprehensive understanding of the U.S. legal system and of the legal publishing system, including the organization of legal materials and their availability across multiple platforms and in multiple formats;
  • Knowledge of integrated library systems and library management tools including Research Monitor, LibGuides and Quest;
  • Solid computer skills, including proficiency with Outlook, MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint and document management systems.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with a strong attention to detail;
  • Excellent written and oral English-language communication skills;

Ability to:

  • Meet deadlines and respond to changing priorities;
  • Handle many tasks simultaneously;
  • Perform mathematical functions, including addition, subtraction, multiplication division and percentages;
