Roll on Friday
A charity lawyer has pleaded guilty to child sex abuse offences.
Alan Eccles, from Bearsden in Glasgow, admitted to engaging in grossly offensive, indecent, obscene or menacing conversations about the sexual abuse of children.
He also shared indecent photos of children and an intimate picture of a woman.
The 44-year-old currently sits on the Law Society of Scotland’s Charity Law Sub-Committee and was a partner at Scottish law firm Brodies until he resigned from the partnership suddenly in 2020. He reappeared at a smaller firm, BKF, but was no longer there by late 2024. He also lectured on charities and trusts at the University of Strathclyde.
Reporting on the case, the Scottish Sun (headline: “Top Scots charities lawyer unmasked as child sex abuse monster”) quoted a source who said “there are elements to his manner that make this less surprising. He’s an oddball”.
From what RollOnFriday’s heard, that’s an accurate assessment. A source claimed Eccles left Brodies after an incident with a colleague – but that he didn’t tell his wife he was no longer employed and spent his days hanging around Glasgow city centre “in a suit trying to arrange meetings”.
Asked about the circumstances of his departure and whether it reported him to the Law Society of Scotland at the time, a spokesperson for Brodies told ROF, “Our firm’s values and policies make clear our high expectations of colleague conduct”.
