Russia: Chechen lawyer Timur Idalov released from pretrial detention

Chechen lawyer Timur Idalov was released from SIZO-4 in Moscow, where he was held after being sentenced for threatening a prosecutor. Idalov was sentenced to forced labor, and the judge considered the sentence to be in effect, although the lawyer appealed it.

The Telegram channels RusNews and SOTAvision reported on Idalov’s release from the pretrial detention center. In video comments to the publications, the lawyer stated that the decision to leave him in the pretrial detention center after sentencing him to a non-custodial sentence was initially illegal.

Idalov showed the judge’s order on the entry into force of the sentence and documents confirming that he had sent the appeal from the pretrial detention center within the established time frame. “This is impossible according to the law, simply no way. Unless, of course, they issued a separate version of the Criminal Procedure Code specifically for Timur Idalov,” he said.

Idalov was ordered to appear at the criminal-executive inspection tomorrow to receive a work order for forced labor.

On November 28, the Khimki City Court of the Moscow Region sentenced Timur Idalov to one year and eleven months of forced labor on charges of threatening the prosecutor, although the prosecutor’s office only requested a fine. The court also left the lawyer in the pretrial detention center until the sentence comes into force. In addition to forced labor, Idalov was banned from practicing law for three years.
