Schwabe is seeking a Research Librarian Analyst to join Schwabe’s Research & Library Services team in the Portland office. The Research Librarian Analyst provides legal and business research and reference services for the firm’s attorneys and staff. This position will assist users in the selection of research tools, develop tutorials and guides, and provide online and in-person training. They will also performs public records research and make recommendations regarding potential clients in accordance with confidential firm procedures.

A sampling of the duties and responsibilities :

  • Provide legal and business research services including reference interviews, in-depth information retrieval, evaluation, and synthesis based on the specific needs of the requestor.
  • Provide reference services including document delivery, selection of appropriate resources, password maintenance, interlibrary loans, and other reference tasks as assigned.
  • Support the education and training on research databases, forms, and other resources managed by the Research & Library Services (RLS) department.
  • In conjunction with other RLS staff, develop training materials, tutorials and guides.
  • Support the business and competitive intelligence research staff as needed.
  • Support the knowledge management staff and initiatives as needed.
  • Perform library maintenance tasks which may include checking in and routing periodicals, labeling books, maintaining records in internal databases, shelving books, and transitioning from print to electronic resources.
  • Process new materials and maintain currency.
  • Contribute to collection development by identifying and evaluating resources.
  • Market research services and offerings to all attorneys and staff.
  • Assist as requested with audit procedures.
  • Provide backup coverage for other department staff.
  • Assist the Director with administrative responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Knowledge of basic legal reference resources and excellent online research skills including Lexis, Westlaw, Bloomberg, courts and dockets, business and corporate databases, public records databases, and other online and internet resources.
  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of library systems and databases as normally acquired through a Master’s degree in library and information science.
  • Experience with web-based online public access catalogs.
  • Proficient with multiple computer applications, especially Microsoft Office and Adobe.
  • Highly dependable, punctual, and able to provide high-quality service in a fast-paced environment; highly developed service orientation.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a team member.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills; must have the ability to retain and manage a high level of detail.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with a diverse group of attorneys and staff and provide information with ordinary courtesy and tact.
  • Must be able to understand and follow law office procedures.
  • Must be able to quickly prepare and deliver written and verbal reports to attorneys, staff, and management.
  • Ability to travel to other offices as needed.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Master’s degree in library/information science from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that ensures the ability to perform the essential job functions.
  • One year of professional law library experience, preferably in a research role. Law firm experience preferred.
  • Excellent legal, business, and public records research skills.
  • Computer/internet skills with proficiency in MS Office and Adobe Acrobat and use of various online research databases.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
