Full Job Description
The University of California, Irvine School of Law seeks a creative, enthusiastic, and innovative law librarian to serve as Research Law Librarian for Faculty Services. Under the supervision of the Head of Public Services, this librarian takes primary responsibility for developing and managing the Law Library’s faculty services program. The Research Law Librarian for Faculty Services serves as the primary contact for faculty research requests, supervises the Research Specialists/Assistants who assist with faculty research projects, and coordinates with members of the Research Services team to divide faculty research requests when needed. In addition, the Research Law Librarian for Faculty Services participates in the Law Library’s instructional programs, shares in collection development responsibilities, and provides effective user services at the Reference Desk.

Responsibilities include:
Faculty Services Duties

  • Develops, coordinates, and implements faculty services as part of the Law Library’s Request program.
  • Manages all aspects of the Law Library faculty services program, including research, reference, and inte-rlibrary loan and document delivery services.
  • Serves as the primary contact for delivering services to law faculty requesting library services.
  • Establishes policies, procedures, and processes for standardizing research scope and work product for faculty services.
  • Coordinates with members of the Research Services team in performing research.
  • Provides significant research assistance to all faculty members when needed, especially in the foreign, comparative, and international law context.
  • Develops programs and services necessary to meet the needs of the law school’s growing foreign and international programs, including but not limited to the LL.M. program, and law school centers and student organizations focused on foreign and international topics.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises all Research Specialists and student Research Assistants.

Reference and Research Duties

  • Serves as a member of the Law Library’s research services unit, providing excellent and responsive general information and legal reference services through regular shifts at the Reference Desk.
  • Provides specialized legal research consultations to law students, faculty, and staff.
  • Provides specialized legal research consultations to law students through the Research Assistants Partnering Program (RAPP).
  • Participates in development and maintenance of research webpages on the Law Library website, as needed.

Instruction, Collection, and Outreach Duties

  • Participates in development and teaches one section of Legal Research Practicum in the first-year legal research curriculum.
  • Provides legal research instruction in law school classes and other settings as needed.
  • Participates in Law Library collection development efforts, including selection, assessment, and management of resources.
  • Leads tours, orientations, and workshops, such as Saturday Academy of Law and Pre-Law Outreach community programs.

Other Duties

  • Participates actively and effectively on Law Library committees, task forces, and project teams.
  • Represents the Law Library on various Law School, campus-wide, and UC Library System committees and at various meetings and other functions.
  • Participates in and contributes to the profession through professional activities outside the Law Library, including university and public service, and/or research and other creative activity. These activities normally relate to and enhance performance of the primary position responsibilities.
  • Develops and maintains awareness of current developments in the fields of law, library science, and legal research to enhance performance of primary position responsibilities.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • A J.D. degree from a law school with a program accredited by the American Bar Association.
  • A professional degree from a library school with a program accredited by the American Library Association, or other appropriate degree(s) or equivalent experience in one or more fields relevant to library services.
  • Extensive knowledge of legal bibliography and legal research techniques in multiple formats; fluency with new and emerging technologies as they relate to information literacy, legal practice, and library services, or a strong demonstrated interest in developing fluency.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Successful experience in academic law libraries, including demonstrated background in providing effective and successful services to law faculty and law students.
  • Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively and to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness within UCI Libraries and the campus.
