Research Assistant for the China Justice News Update

The Program in Criminal Justice Policy and Management at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government seeks to hire a long term, part-time research assistant to compile and help disseminate a monthly update on justice news from China. ?Working under the supervision of a senior research associate, the assistant will read original source materials, write summaries of articles that capture dynamic developments in China?s criminal justice, and then format the Update for publication on the web.

Since 2008, the Program has published over fifty issues of the China Justice News Update (CJNU) on its website, linked below. Currently, the CJNU focuses on the changing images and interpretations of crime and criminal justice in the Chinese media. ?Recent issues have focused on controversial topics in the evolution of criminal justice ? trends in youth crime, compensation for victims, new sentencing processes. ?

Successful candidates for the position will have excellent Chinese reading skills and native or near-native English writing ability. ?Candidates must also be able to critically analyze media coverage, answering questions about the conflicts and interests behind the events as well as the way they are represented in the news. ?Familiarity with criminal justice issues in China and electronic media sources in China is an asset, but not required. ?The assistant will enjoy flexibility of work location, as well as working schedules. ?The average workload is 10 hours each week, which has flexibility as well.

This work is compensated within the range of $14-$20 an hour, consistent with education level and experience as per the Harvard Kennedy School temporary employee wage scale.
