Purpose of position: The reference librarian will be part of the Tarlton Law Library’s public services staff and will participate in a variety of the library’s functions, including providing reference services and faculty research support, classroom teaching and other instructional activities.
Essential functions: Provide reference service to students and staff of the law school, as well as to the university community at large, members of the bar, and the general public. Provide research and reference services to law school faculty through the library’s liaison program. Participate in teaching basic and advanced legal research. Assist in the development of instruction and outreach programs that educate students on legal research strategies and sources. Participate in the library’s orientation programs, conduct tours, and offer instructional sessions. Other related functions as assigned. The schedule for this position is Tuesday – Saturday, 9:00am – 6:00pm, with one late shift (11am – 8pm) per week during the academic year.
Required qualifications: A master’s degree in Library or Information Science (MLS or equivalent degree) from an accredited program and a JD from an ABA-accredited law school are required; degrees must be completed by start date of employment. One year of experience working in a law library. Knowledge of legal research techniques, sources, and formats is required. Applicants must have a strong service orientation and an interest in innovation. Applicants must have a professional demeanor, strong interpersonal skills, and excellent oral and written communication skills. Applicants must have excellent organizational, time-management and analytical skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a team.
Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience and one to three years of professional experience in an academic law library.
