The Reference Librarian exercises discretion and independent judgment while working under the general direction of the Library Services Manager and according to established Firm policies and procedures. The Reference Librarian is primarily responsible for providing legal research and reference services to attorneys and staff to ensure that their needs for information are met efficiently, accurately, and cost effectively. Must have experience working in a Law Library.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct research using Firm Library materials, the Internet, databases such as Lexis Advance, WestlawNext, Bloomberg Law, Cheetah and HeinOnline, and other other outside resources to answer legal, business and other questions.*
  • Independently determine and develop solutions that require the application of sophisticated Library principles and practices.* *
  • While primarily conducting research for attorneys and staff where the librarian is located, this position will also conduct research in response to information and document requests from all Firm office locations when necessary and appropriate.* *
  • In conjunction with the Library Services Manager, evaluate and, when appropriate, recommend new publications and research services in a variety of formats to develop the Firm’s information resources. Similarly, the Reference Librarian will also recommend cancellations as appropriate. Maintain local records as appropriate for this purpose.* *
  • Assist and instruct attorneys and other individuals in the use of Library resources and computer-assisted legal research.* *
  • Provide support and participation in other Firm-wide projects as appropriate.* *
  • Establish and maintain a network of information resources outside the Firm with other libraries, associations, information companies, and government agencies to obtain information not available at the Firm.* *
  • Keep abreast of the profession by attending professional meetings and continuing education programs to monitor new developments in law librarianship.*

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association and must have three or more years of experience in a law firm environment.*
  • Experience with a variety of Library and related computer systems in required.* *
  • Computer proficient with familiarity of various database systems including Outlook, Microsoft Office, Internet, Excel, MS Word, including experience and working knowledge of a computerized Library system (i.e. EOS).* *
  • Analytical and technical skills requiring an aptitude for detail, precision, and logic with comprehensive knowledge of Library principles and practices in order to conduct complex, in-depth research and reference services; analyze data and recommend solutions; evaluate new publications, research services and resources.* *
  • Proactive with excellent troubleshooting, problem resolution, and follow-through skills. Exhibit high degree of initiative in exercising independent judgment with the ability to manage multiple priorities.* *
  • Excellent organizational skills including record keeping, data collection, and system information. Ability to compile and analyze complex data and furnish concise, detailed information in report format, written correspondence, e-mail or verbally.* *
  • Ability to retrieve and distribute library materials, written documentation, files and office supplies, and/or push and pull carts of books and periodicals weighing up to 25 pounds, and/or retrieve and replace objects from shelves up to 8 feet high.*
