Job Description

The Syracuse University Law Library invites applications for a Reference Librarian, Faculty & Outreach Services, to provide reference and research support to College of Law faculty and to foster relationships with alumni and with the local bar generally.

The Reference Librarian, Faculty & Outreach Services, will collaborate with other law librarians and staff to develop initiatives that enhance the research experience of faculty and their student assistants, and will craft and implement programs that showcase Law Library collections and services to College of Law alumni and other local attorneys.

The Reference Librarian will design and deliver training materials and programs, both in person and virtually, to faculty, students, and alumni.

The Reference Librarian will provide classroom instruction at faculty request to enable law students to develop legal research proficiency in doctrinal and skills subjects, and will create Research Guides to support individual classes.

The Reference Librarian will develop the Law Library’s electronic and print collections in assigned subject areas and will serve as the library’s liaison to faculty who teach and do research on those subjects.

Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science.
  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • At least one year of academic law library experience.
  • At least one year of legal reference experience.

  • Substantial experience with data organization and data management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to write effectively for a wide variety of library users.
  • High degree of professionalism.
  • Ability to both work independently and to interact effectively with colleagues, faculty, staff, students, and the public.
  • Strong commitment to legal reference service and instruction in a complex educational environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal reference and research services to students, faculty, alumni, members of the local bar, and all users of and visitors to the Law Library, with special emphasis on services to faculty and alumni.
  • Foster relationships with COL alumni and with the local bar generally by creating Research Guides on topics of interest to the practicing bar, by offering instruction in the use of practice-oriented research tools, and by marketing Law Library services and programs to alumni and other external constituencies.
  • Support College of Law teaching, learning, and research by providing individualized legal research assistance, by compiling bibliographies and collections of primary source documents, and by developing the Law Library’s electronic and print collections in assigned subject areas. Serve as the library’s liaison to faculty who teach and do research in those subject areas.
  • Provide classroom instruction, both in person and virtually, to enable law students to develop legal research proficiency in doctrinal and skills subjects, at faculty request, and create Research Guides to support individual classes.
  • Participate in staffing the Reference Desk, including evenings and weekends on rotation, determining the best sources and methods to fulfill research requests, including decisions to convert ILL and document delivery requests to purchases as a function of collection development.
  • Other duties as assigned.
