Provides reference and research assistance to library patrons:
consults with patrons in person or via telephone, email, or video conferencing
conducts reference interview to determine the exact nature of the question
advises the patron about useful resources to answer the question
teaches the patron how to use the resources, if necessary
responsible for specific reference shifts assigned by the Associate Director
Provides legal research and legal information literacy education to the Barry Law community:
prepares lesson plans and conducts guest presentations in the first year Legal Research & Writing classes
prepares lesson plans and conducts guest presentations for other classes and group sessions
teaches graduate-level for-credit classes in the LLM program
plans and conducts workshops
creates research lessons on video
continually updates lesson plans for freshness
provides one-on-one instruction to students and faculty
creates instructional materials to aid in research education, such as libguides
tracks legal research systems, tools and processes, and informs students and faculty about new developments and updates in the legal research industry
Engages in outreach efforts and professional development:
participates in Law Library outreach efforts around campus and in the law library community
contributes to the Law Library displays and social media
contributes to digital library brochures
participates in new student programs such as orientation and A2O
participates in associations relevant to Law Libraries and attends professional development programs
supports Law School scholarship by assisting with digital publication and distribution through channels such as SSRN and Digital Commons.
Participates in Law Library collection development by recommending purchases of books, digital resources, other media, and emerging technologies that will further the library mission of public service to all patrons:
evaluate and recommend resources to purchase
participate in monthly selection from an approval plan
evaluate items in the collection for retention or replacement
participate in collection development policymaking
Participates in Faculty Liaison Program:
serves as point-of-contact to the library for assigned faculty members
assists and instructs faculty members with the use of Canvas
assists and instructs faculty members with the use of video conferencing
Assists and instructs faculty members with other instructional technology
consults with faculty members about research resources
consults with and trains faculty RAs about research resources
Other duties as assigned by the Associate Director & Head of Public Services.
This position requires a comprehensive knowledge of legal research and resources, expert skill level with Westlaw and Lexis, and an expert ability to learn and teach other legal information technologies, such as HeinOnline and ProQuest.
