Position Summary

The position of Reference and Instruction Librarian is a full-time faculty position. The Librarian is responsible for providing essential library services, including reference, research, and circulation, to law faculty, staff, and students. In addition to librarian responsibilities, the Librarian teaches courses, class sessions, or workshops associated with legal research and at least one other required course each academic year. The Librarian is also responsible for developing and publishing legal scholarship and for service to the law school, the legal profession, and the academic community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Serves as the primary reference and research librarian for Concordia Law students, staff, and faculty.

2. Participates in the Library Liaison program providing personalized research and teaching assistance to School of Law faculty.

3. Engages in formal and informal teaching of legal research and teaches at least one other required course each academic year.

4. Works closely with the Law Library Director and Technical Services Librarian to monitor the operation of the library, which may include maintenance of electronic resources and managing website and social media presence.

5. Assists in developing and implementing public services policies and procedures.

6. Trains and manages library assistants and student workers, as needed.

7. Participates in Collection Development of print and electronic resources.

8. Contributes to maintaining library statistics and departmental reports.

9. Engages colleagues at the national and regional levels.

10. Develop and construct course syllabus, curriculum, handouts, lectures, presentations and other materials for the specified course(s) based on the course description.

11. Provide subject matter expertise to support the specified academic program, ensuring that student learning outcomes are achieved.

12. Facilitate student learning, provide effective instruction, and perform formative and summative evaluations of student learning for all assigned classes.

13. Provide prompt and meaningful feedback to students in a fair, objective and consistent manner. Use established rubrics and clear grading criteria.

14. Assign grades and maintain course/student records in accordance with FERPA regulations and submit grades and records by established deadlines.

15. Be available to students via email, phone, or personal conferences. The method of contact and hours of availability should be clearly communicated to supervisors and to students through the course syllabus each semester.

16. Address issues of academic integrity in a direct and timely manner.

17. Incorporate feedback from class observations.

18. Participate in academic advising, creating an atmosphere in which students and faculty may voice opinions and exchange ideas, and assess student learning at the law school.

19. Serve on faculty committees, advisory boards, hiring committees, faculty senate, or as a student organization advisor (as applicable).

20. Engage in academic scholarship pertinent to the faculty member’s area of expertise and discipline.

21. Attend local, regional, state, or national meetings, if required or necessary for the discipline.

22. Attend departmental and University-wide meetings where appropriate or as required by the Dean and the Associate Dean of Academics.

23. Attend commencement or other ceremonies appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline or program.

24. Participate in service activities, both inside and outside of the University.

25. Work collaboratively with the Dean, the Associate Dean of Academics, faculty, staff, and students to advance the mission and academic excellence of the School of Law, in accordance with the mission, values and vision of CU.

26. Perform other duties, as assigned.

Work Contacts

The position requires daily interaction with the Dean, the Associate Dean of Academics, the Director of the Law Library, students, staff, faculty, and administrators. The position may also interact with members of the community and colleagues from other institutions.

Scope of Work

Provides professional and expert advice and imparts library instruction to students on a daily basis; acts as a subject matter expert, teaching coursework onsite or in a virtual classroom; keeps leaders informed of results, outcomes and obstacles; and is subject to academic review and supports the execution of strategic initiatives of the University.

Working Conditions

Work is generally performed in an office, library, and classroom environment with limited noise exposure.

Minimum Physical Requirements

Ability to teach coursework in an onsite classroom or in a virtual classroom, depending upon teaching assignments.

Tolerance for prolonged positioning including sitting and standing

Able to use technology and administrative software to respond to inquiries and create teaching materials

Able to use computer hardware and peripherals as well as low technology office equipment including copiers and scanners

Able to communicate effectively in person, in front of audiences, electronically, and via telephone

Tolerance for repetitive motions including keyboarding and writing

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school (or comparable degree).

Master’s degree in Library or Information Science (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA accredited university (or equivalent degrees).

Knowledge of legal materials, research methodology, and current trends in the legal profession and law libraries.

Demonstrated awareness of current technology trends in the legal profession and law libraries.

Demonstrated teaching experience or aptitude for law teaching.

Outstanding record of academic or professional achievement.

Demonstration of a record of scholarship or aptitude for scholarly contribution and commitment to the study of law.

Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate professionally with a diverse constituency.

Preferred Experience

Knowledge of Integrated Library Systems, preferably Ex Libris.

Experience with webpage management, LibGuides, and/or social media platforms.

Familiarity with course management systems, such as TWEN or Blackboard.

Prior academic law library experience.
