Across the world, courageous lawyers are challenging abuse, confronting impunity and helping survivors seek justice. They are finding creative ways to push for change, often while working in extremely difficult circumstances.
To support these efforts, REDRESS launched the Innovative Lawyers Awards as part of the United Against Torture Consortium (UATC), with financial support from the European Union.
The awards recognise and empower emerging leaders in the anti-torture movement, providing financial assistance for their work and connecting recipients to a global network of peers and human rights advocates.
To date, 19 lawyers from 13 countries a have received awards in recognition of their exceptional work.
Among them are Osvaldo de Almeida, an Angolan human rights lawyer dedicated to raising awareness about the systematic challenges to human rights that his country faces; Nina Barrouin, who supports victims in pivotal cases of police brutality and systemic torture in Brazil; and Roberta Ruiz, who represents LGBTI+ individuals in Mexico, particularly trans women, in cases involving human rights violations.
