Big news: Quinn Emanuel ?? to represent Ukraine pro bono, in case against Russia at the European Court of Human Rights

I want to highlight work we are doing in London that we as a firm are particularly proud of.

Our firm has been representing the State of Ukraine and its interests for many years, including on important and highly sensitive claims against Russia relating to the illegal invasion and purported annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Due to our close relationship with key Ministries of the Ukrainian government, since the outset of the invasion we’ve been advising on many international legal issues occasioned by the invasion.

This has now resulted in our being engaged by the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine to represent Ukraine in its anticipated inter-state claim against Russia before the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg for various egregious breaches of the European Convention on Human Rights.

We’ve already been advising the MoJ behind the scenes on requests which have been made for urgent interim measures, including in connection with ensuring humanitarian corridors for civilians; a prohibition on the use of chemical weapons and indiscriminate attacks; steps to secure nuclear power plants; and cessation of operations aimed at the assassination of the civilian leadership of Ukraine and on preparations for the substantive claim.

We are waiting for a decision of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, expected in the next couple of days, as to the legal consequences of Russia’s recent expulsion from the Council.

Provided that the decision does not foreclose claims against Russia under the Convention, which in the circumstances would be extraordinary, we will be proceeding to prepare Ukraine’s substantive inter-state claim for filing asap. Alex Gerbi and Julianne Hughes-Jennett in our London office are leading our effort on this claim, which the firm is doing pro bono.

We are very proud of the work that Alex and Julianne and their team are doing on this historic matter.
