Job Summary
About the Company: Harvard Magazine was founded independently by alumni in 1898 and is published today by a separately incorporated nonprofit affiliate of Harvard University. Harvard Magazine staff have excellent access to University news and news sources, but the magazine is written, edited, and produced—like any independent news medium—with readers’ interests foremost in mind. That is to say, the magazine is not published with the aim of promoting financial donations to the University, as development and other University publications properly are.
Audience: Harvard Magazine aims to reach and engage the global Harvard community, including alumni, faculty, administrators, students, and other affiliates. The magazine also appeals to a general audience who have an affinity for Harvard. The readership is characterized by its demographics, influence and affluence, making it an attractive audience for advertisers/sponsors.
Position Description
Responsibilities:
- Ensure the Magazine’s future sustainability by successfully positioning the publication as a model of high-quality journalism with a commitment to independence and integrity.
- Directly oversee the following functions: digital strategy and audience development, technology, advertising and sponsorship, fund raising, marketing, and finance/operations.
- Collaborate with the Editor to develop and implement a comprehensive digital strategy for the magazine that leverages a variety of media formats, including but not limited to the magazine’s website, social media, podcasts, videos, webinars, interactives, email newsletters, etc.
- Foster an organizational culture that prizes innovation, collaboration, and growth.
- Lead the development and implementation of a strategy to better engage the target audience-the global Harvard community and general audiences who have an affinity for Harvard.
- Increase the frequency of visits to the magazine’s website and maximize reader engagement.
- Identify and pursue new advertising, sponsorship and membership opportunities to increase income.
- Manage budgets and financial performance of the magazine.
- Oversee the production of the print magazine and other media formats.
- Represent Harvard Magazine at alumni events and conferences.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a field requiring strong writing and communication skills.
- 8 years of hands-on experience in publishing, media, or a related field.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- Strong understanding of digital media platforms, including social media, websites, and mobile apps.
- Strong financial and operational acumen.
- Ability to effectively motivate and manage staff in a hybrid workplace, and manage, build, and influence relationships with colleagues across the University.
- Proven track record of creating and executing successful digital strategies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, presentation skills and negotiation skills required.
- Strong leadership and project management skills.
- Passion for journalism and higher education.
Additional Information
